Current Emergency Services
The closest hospitals (and emergency rooms) are about 10 miles from the
center of South Lee County. The community has actively and consistently advised
legislators about the need for a freestanding emergency room in the South Lee
County area.
However, current Florida legislation prohibits, or severely restricts, these
kinds of facilities. The community does have Urgent Care facilities, but these
are not emergency rooms and have to transport emergency cases (by ambulance or
helicopter) to a local hospital.
There are two major healthcare systems in the area which run the closest
hospitals: Lee Memorial Health System
in Lee County and NCH
Healthcare System in Collier County. Lee Memorial owns property in Estero,
but does not currently have a South Lee County hospital in its 10 year plan. The Estero
Council of Community Leaders is actively pursuing several means of preparing the
community for its expanding healthcare needs.
Regular meetings with the City of Bonita
Springs on common issues has included health care options as a top priority.
The community also recently completed a
visioning process to plan
for the needs of Estero's health care. One of the conclusions of these
meetings was the need for comprehensive information about local health care
options. This web site section is designed to be such a source of information.
