Estero Historical Society Will Move Two Historic Homes to the Park
The two historic houses that have been donated to the Estero Historical
Society by the College of Life Foundation are from the early 1900's era. The
Collier House was built in 1906 and was used mainly as a family home. I'm sure
the father worked in the orange groves in Estero and probably fished, had a
vegetable garden and perhaps some livestock to keep the family healthy. The one
room schoolhouse was built about 1901. Board of Education show that this
was a one room schoolhouse built by the Hendry family and donated to Estero. On
the Board of Education records was written that only children from Estero could
attend there. No Koreshan teachings were allowed; and no teacher who had taught
at the Koreshan School would be allowed to teach at the Estero School. The
Estero Historical Society is very fortunate to have 2 former students that
attended the school in the 1920's. Forbes Horne from Estero and Allen Ellis,
currently living in Fort Myers. We have been able to get oral histories from
both of these great gentlemen and also from their families.
