An Innovation Economy for Southwest Florida

At the November Estero Community
Planning Workshop at the Hyatt many of the participants
suggested that Estero needed to follow up on several good
Economic Development suggestions. As a result the Estero Council
of Community Leaders (ECCL) has organized an Economic
Development Committee. Over the last decade the Estero
Community Planning Panel (ECPP) has zoned over 11 million square
feet of commercial property in Estero at the request of the
owners and developers of that property. Between 2000 and 2007
about 4 million square feet of that property was developed and
is now in place…1.6 million of it in Coconut Point. If you do
the math you will quickly observe that we have 7 million square
feet left to be built. Our challenge is to develop a
plan that ensures that this land is developed in a way that is
compatible with the surrounding properties and consistent with
the high quality of the existing development.
As you know there are many existing economic development
entities in Southwest Florida. Fortunately we have worked with
many of them on other projects. Or goal is to build on these
relationships to make sure that our needs and priorities are
consistent with theirs and that our needs and priorities become
a bigger part of the regional perspective than they are today.
These groups include FGCU, Southwest Florida International
Airport, Lee Memorial Healthcare System, Lee County’s Economic
Development and Planning Departments, the Horizon Council, the
City of Bonita Springs and the Bonita Springs Chamber of
Commerce Economic Development Committee, among others.
